Telling War Stories: The Rhetoric of the Great War
“Telling War Stories” highlights the rhetorical tactics used in the days and months leading up to the United States' entry into World War I. These persuasive and inspirational words and images affected not only Willa Cather and other authors, but the reading public as a whole, the politicians who decided the course of the war, the soldiers themselves and their loved ones.
This exhibit provides a historical framework that is accessible and visually interesting for all audiences, while addressing a larger question of the language of war and peace. It utilizes archival documents and ephemera, military records and maps, photographs and other visual images to contextualize the Great War, both in the trenches and at home.
Exhibited in conjunction with the 61st Annual Spring Conference of the Willa Cather Foundation. Curated by Tracy Sanford Tucker, Education Director & Certified Archivist, and compiled by Cassandra C. Tucker, National Willa Cather Center digital humanities intern.
